Estate Notes

Domaine La Croix Canat's 2015 Sancerre Les Blancs Gâteaux was Joanna Simon's 'Wine of the Week' in June 2017.

Domaine La Croix Canat is Tinel-Blondelet's very special 10 hectare parcel of Sancerre produced using organic methods in the Loire commune of Thauvenay.

Les Blancs Gâteaux refers to the white flints that cover the limestone slopes of La Croix Canat that gives this sassy Sancerre its deliciously dry flinty character. Winemaker Annick remains true to her wonderful terroir. This type of soil enables the production of a bright pale golden wine with green highlights. Dry and fruity with real finesse. This really is top class Sancerre, with great depth of gooseberry fruit married perfectly with minerality and fine acidity to balance.

Annick Tinel-Blondelet  has over 400 years of winemaking in her family. She took over the Estate from her parents, Camille & Fernand, in 1983, and now represents the 12th generation of winegrowers in the family, working the estate with her sister Agnès. Situated beside the old Roman road above the east bank of the Loire river, Tinel-Blondelet’s vineyards are sited on slopes of Kimmeridgian marl as found in the best vineyards of Chablis. The estate has been classified with the highest of the three available certifications for environmental status, has wonderful soils, which impart the world-renowned mineral nuances and complexity to their wines, while great fruit concentration is derived from the optimal ripeness of the grapes grown on the 35-year old vines that bask on the south-facing slopes.

Annick is driven by the desire to preserve the typicity of the wines, producing authentic wines of real character, class, and expression, reflective of their origins.

"...there's something about summer sunshine that makes the lure of a good Sancerre even stronger. And this one is the real deal. Sancerre: a whoosh of bracingly grassy, lime and herb aromas, some riper peach-like fruit in the mouth, a sustained mineral undercurrent and mouthwatering acidity. It comes from an individual vineyard, Les Blancs Gâteaux (which refers to the stones in the soil), and I love the fact that it's made by a twelfth generation wine grower, Annick Tinel-Blondelet, who works the estate, Domaine La Croix Canat, with her sister Agnès (and, yes, I like the fact that it's made by women). I've said what food it goes well with but you can, of course, enjoy it on its own." Joanna Simon

Ripe mineral depth with floral elderflower, currant leaf and pear aromas. Focused and concentrated with good acidity to balance, fine mineral base, and intense aromatic finish, really quite fat and succulent for Sauvignon, somewhat showing the vintage.
