Dog Point's 2018 Pinot Noir is a lovely, silky, Pinot style; medium bodied with lashings of red fruits. A great match with duck, venison, lamb, and mushroom dishes.
Dog Point was one of the earliest private vineyards established in the Marlborough's Wairau Valley and has some of New Zealand's oldest Pinot vines dating back to the early 1980s. Fruit for the 2018 vintage was hand-picked to ensure quality, and the wine was aged in (40% new) French oak barrels for 18 months.
Dog Point Vineyard is the largest organic Biogro certified vineyard in New Zealand, with practices including turning winery waste a healthy organic compost and collecting leachate to use as fertiliser to help conserve moisture and improve soil structure, plus the planting of buckwheat between the vines to encourage beneficial insects for biological control of insect pests. Over the winter months, sheep are brought onto the property to control grass and weed growth and assist in adding organic matter to the soil.
"Supple, vibrant, organic pinot noir with cherry, violet, blackcurrant leaf, spice, anise, and subtle nutty oak flavours. High-energy wine with impressive purity. An elegant and youthful pinot noir with obvious cellaring potential. This must be one of Marlborough’s most consistently top reds. And it’s organic." Bob Campbell MW
