Craggy Range, Sophia, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
"...concentrated, full-bodied and powerful, with density, great structure and superbly ripe fruit flavours. A majestic wine." Huon Hooke
|Grape Blend||Merlot; Cabernet Franc|
Craggy Range's 2016 vintage of its Sophia cuvée is a classy, full-throttle, yet elegant, Merlot-based, Bordeaux-inspired red from the impressive Gimblett Gravels sub-region of Hawkes Bay on the east coast of the North Island. A great wine from one of New Zealand’s finest estates and perfect with slow-cooked beef or hearty lentil dishes.
The Gimblett Gravels is renowned for its affinity with southern French varietals, including Merlot, and Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc, and Craggy Range is at the top of the tree. Fruit for the 2016 Sophia consists of handpicked Merlot (81%) and Cabernet Franc (19%) to ensure quality and aged in (45% new) French oak barriques for 18 months to add complexity, without overpowering the wine.
Craggy Range is a family-owned winery, spectacularly situated in the shadow of Te Mata Peak in the premium Hawkes Bay winegrowing region of New Zealand. Craggy Range produces a portfolio of quality wines including the iconic Prestige, Family and Appellation collections, as well as Limited Editions from exceptional winery-owned vineyards in Hawkes Bay, Martinborough and Marlborough.
"Deep, quite youthful red/purple colour. The bouquet is spotlessly clean, fresh and bright, showing classy oak and properly ripe fruit. The wine is concentrated, full-bodied and powerful, with density, great structure and superbly ripe fruit flavours. A majestic wine. It's a baby, and all it needs is a bit more time." Huon Hooke
