Craggy Range's 2016 vintage of its premium Le Sol Syrah is an iron fist in a silk glove, with wonderful elegance and power reminiscent of a top northern Rhône. A great wine from one of New Zealand’s finest estates.
The Gimblett Gravels sub-region of Hawkes Bay on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island is renowned for its affinity with southern French varietals, including Syrah, and Craggy Range is at the top of the tree. Fruit for the 2016 Syrah was handpicked to ensure quality and aged in (35% new) French oak barriques to add complexity, without overpowering the wine.
Craggy Range is a family-owned winery, spectacularly situated in the shadow of Te Mata Peak in the premium Hawkes Bay winegrowing region of New Zealand. Craggy Range produces a portfolio of quality wines including the iconic Prestige, Family and Appellation collections, as well as Limited Editions from exceptional winery-owned vineyards in Hawkes Bay, Martinborough and Marlborough.
“Nicely perfumed and typically dense, rich syrah with a lovely texture and firm, rounded tannins. Powerful yet elegant wine with plum, berry and mixed spice flavours together with an interesting savoury edge.” Bob Campbell
“Full-bodied, supple and nicely balanced at this early age, with spicy detailed aromas including some stemmy whole-bunch nuances. Elegant, supple, soft-tannin palate. Possibly the best Le Sol to date.” Huon Hooke
