Estate Notes

Smith Haut Lafitte has gone from nigh on the bottom of the class to the very top in a matter of a decade. It offers scintillating quality and fantastic value-for-money from a left bank château, and its wines (and owners) are some of the most charming in all Bordeaux.

Smith Haut Lafitte is owned by the amiable ex-Olympic skier Daniel Cathiard and his wife Florence, who have transformed the property and the quality of the wines beyond recognition since 1990. Smith-Haut-Lafitte is not classified as organic, but its practices are very much in the natural vein. They make their own organic compost and oak barrels.

Reviews

"There is a strong and persuasive marine influence on the nose, suggestions of iodine and seaweed infusing the black fruit that is very well defined and nicely embroidered with the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy, slightly chalky tannin; saline in the mouth and linear, focused, quite penetrating finish. In a similar fashion to the Haut-Bailly, this is a more "athletic" Smith Haut Lafitte, but one that allows the terroir to come through and be articulated. This is a stylish "S.H.L." from talented winemaker Fabien Teitgen." eRobertParker.com
