Estate Notes

Smith Haut Lafitte has gone from nigh on the bottom of the class to the very top in a relatively short space of time, due in no small part to the investment, care and determination of Florence & Daniel Cathiard and their team. It offers scintillating quality and still relative value-for-money given its quality from a left bank château, and its wines (and owners) are some of the most charming in all Bordeaux.

Smith Haut Lafitte is owned by the amiable ex-Olympic skier Daniel Cathiard and his wife Florence, who have transformed the property and the quality of the wines beyond recognition since 1990. Smith-Haut-Lafitte is not classified as organic, but its practices are very much in the natural vein. They make their own organic compost and oak barrels.

Reviews

"…iodine and seaweed infusing the black fruit that is very well defined and nicely embroidered with the oak… saline in the mouth and linear, focused…allows the terroir to come through and be articulated. This is a stylish "S.H.L”…” eRobertParker.com
