Estate Notes

Smith Haut Lafite really produced the goods in the great 2010 Bordeaux vintage - a hugely concentrated, full-bodied Graves with great definition and precision. Original wooden cases are available.

2010 was another great Bordeaux vintage, following on from the sensational 2009 vintage, and it may well end up the equal of (if not surpassing) both 2005 and 2009 – with so many wines showing a perfect balance of fruit, tannins, acidity and alcohol. It was a different vintage to 2009, and 2010 Bordeaux generally warrant greater ageing.

Smith Haut Lafitte has gone from nigh on the bottom of the class to the very top in a matter of a decade. It offers scintillating quality and fantastic value-for-money from a left bank château, and its wines (and owners) are some of the most charming in all Bordeaux.

Smith Haut Lafitte is owned by the amiable ex-Olympic skier Daniel Cathiard and his wife Florence, who have transformed the property and the quality of the wines beyond recognition since 1990. Smith-Haut-Lafitte is not classified as organic, but its practices are very much in the natural vein. They make their own organic compost and oak barrels.

Reviews

“This is an extraordinary performance once again from the Cathiard family, the proprietors of Smith-Haut-Lafitte. They think the 2010 is even better than the 2009. (I disagree, but only slightly.) This wine has laser-like definition in its an remarkable nose of a subtle charcoal fire interwoven with spring flowers, creme de cassis, blueberry liqueur and spicy wood. Full-bodied, stunningly concentrated, long, rich and moderately tannic, this wine is set for an exceptionally long life..." Robert Parker
