Château Mouton Rothschild 2016 was rated a perfect 100 points by robertparker.com and comes from a great Bordeaux vintage (comparable to 2005) on the Left Bank, with consistency of quality and quantity across all appellations, and particularly brilliant in Pauillac.

Unashamedly gregarious and glamorous with a turbulent history to match, Mouton Rothschild is the antithesis of the restrained demeanour exhibited by other first growths. It has been under the Barons de Rothschild ownership for over 100 years, and it was the unremitting efforts of the flamboyant Baron Philippe de Rothschild that resulted in the château's historical upgrade to premier cru status in 1973 – the only change ever made to the classification of 1855.

"The 2016 Mouton-Rothschild has an understated bouquet at first, featuring scents of blackberry, bilberry and traces of kelp and brine. Wonderful delineation here, and it builds in intensity with a few swirls of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, a velvety-smooth texture and an elegant, utterly beguiling finish that flirts with perfection. Astonishing.
