Estate Notes

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste 1996 carries a hint of crème de cassis, which is the château's trademark characteristic in top vintages and is in excellent condition for the year.

Grand-Puy Lacoste is an estate on the up. Its success, as the welcoming Isabelle La Sueur told us, can be attributed to owner François-Xavier Borie, who since taking over from his father, has taken this 5th growth Pauillac château from good to great. Xavier has rebuilt the cellars, installed smaller vats and instigated a more rigorous selection process.

The palate is medium-bodied with a firm structure and well-judged acidity that lends this 1996 impressive focus. It is totally and unashamedly classic in style, austere compared to other Pauillacs from this vintage, the kind of gentleman's claret that should grace a dinner table. It remains a very fine Pauillac..."
