Chateau Figeac, Saint Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classe, Bordeaux, France 2018
"The 2018 Figeac is simply magnificent. A regal, soaring wine with tremendous vertical lift and nuance, the 2018 is marvellously complete from the very first taste. All the elements fall into place effortlessly. Rosé petal, mint, lavender and spice add nuance to a core of red/purplish fruit. The 2018 Figeac is brilliant. That's all there is to it." |Grape Blend||Merlot 37%, Cabernet Sauvignon 33%, Cabernet Franc 30%|
Château Figeac's Premier Grand Cru vineyards are located in the west of Saint-Émilion, on the edge of Pomerol, sited on three gravel hills that give this Premier Grand Cru Classé its identity; one of elegance and harmony, balance and complexity, strength and plenty of fruit. A stunning fine red Saint-Émilion wine style. Here, uniquely, Merlot is the minority grape variety, and following a manual harvest of rich and concentrated grapes, traditional vinification includes 15 to 18 months of aging in completely new barrels, for a production of about 120 000 bottles.
Sweet floral nose (violets), blackcurrant, raspberry and leather. A forward ripe fruit hit on the palate and the tannins providing a little grainy texture and the freshness is lively and providing a long and persistent finish. In years gone by Figeac could be guilty of making heavily extracted wines, often muscular and impenetrable. No more.
"Deep purple-black in color, it charges out of the gate with vivacious black and red cherries, cassis, warm plums and wild blueberries scents plus fragrant hints of violets, star anise, tilled soil and forest floor with wafts of Ceylon tea and chocolate box. Full-bodied and jam-packed with energetic, crunchy black and blue fruits, it has a rock-solid, firm, grainy frame and loads of bright, refreshing sparks lifting the dense layers on the very long, savory finish. Wow - the Cabernet really makes itself known this vintage, and it is good. The signature of this wine is so clear, so defined, that this is a Bordeaux wine without peers. In my view, this is the finest Figeac ever produced." robertparker.com
"The 2018 Figeac is simply magnificent. A regal, soaring wine with tremendous vertical lift and nuance, the 2018 is marvelously complete from the very first taste. All the elements fall into place effortlessly. Medium in body and refined, the 2018 is vibrant, with fine tannins and, frankly, quite a bit more freshness than I expected to see given the very dry, sunny summer. Rose petal, mint, lavender and spice add nuance to a core of red/purplish fruit. The 2018 Figeac is brilliant. That's all there is to it." Antonio Galloni
