"The 2018 L'Evangile is shaping up to be exceptional. Rich and sumptuous in the glass, the 2018 exudes richness in all of its dimensions. Opulent and dense in the glass, with soft curves and silky, polished tannins, the 2018 is hugely promising. All the elements just fall into place. Dark raspberry jam, cloves, menthol and new leather are some of the many notes that build in a sumptuous, racy Evangile loaded with class and personality. I can't wait to taste it from bottle." L'Evangile possesses the rare duality of professionalism and joviality – from the owner Baron Eric Rothschild – to the château staff.

In 1990 the Rothschild group took controlling interest of l'Evangile, which was previously run by the formidable Madame Ducasse who was still running it in her 90s. Madame was initially sceptical of the Baron Eric's intentions and wouldn't let the Rothschild's winemaker, Charles Chevallier, near the vines, and so he used to have to sneak around the vineyard just to see how things were progressing!

L'Evangile comprises just 10 hectares, having pulled up a lot of vines to focus more on quality, and produces fine red wines which are uncharacteristically muscular for Pomerol - and some of the most sought after of the appellation.

This L'Evangile is a disarmingly approachable wine. On the nose tobacco, mint spice and dark cherry and blackberry fruit. On the palate there is an excellent texture from the supple, ripe tannin and smooth delivery of the fruit flavours, backed up by superb mineral freshness. An open and hedonistic wine that will provide satisfaction for many years to come.

"Deep garnet-purple colored, it slips seductively out of the glass with glamorous notes of baked black cherries, warm blueberries and raspberry tart plus wafts of kirsch, red roses, rose hip tea, espresso, licorice and sandalwood. Full-bodied, rich, concentrated and delivering opulent black fruit layers, the palate has a firm frame of lovely, ripe, rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant. Beautiful." robertparker.com
