Estate Notes

Ducru-Beaucaillou (lit. beautiful pebbles) is a 'super second growth' – an estate that is working at a quality level equal to, or approaching, that of a first growth. Made for relatively early enjoyment rather than speculation, it is exceptionally interesting in both quality and price.

Under the late Jean-Eugène Borie, one of Bordeaux's real gentlemen, the estate, which possesses a wonderful sweeping panoramic views over the Gironde, rose to stardom in the latter part of last century, with a succession of scintillating vintages.

"The greatest Ducru produced this century. Breathtaking aromas of berries, violets, vanilla and blackberries set the stage for a wine that's full-bodied and tannic, yet very fine and long in the mouth. This has fabulous structure for aging." Wine Spectator

"A wine of extraordinary charm and elegance, the dark garnet-colored 1985 Ducru-Beaucaillou has a floral, cedary nose intermixed with red and black currants as well as flowers. The wine is fully mature and soft, with beautiful concentration and purity. It is not a blockbuster, and certainly not nearly as powerful and massive as the 1986, but it is certainly much more seductive."
