Estate Notes

Château Calon-Ségur 1996 is in excellent condition.

Château Calon-Ségur's wines are capable of challenging its more illustrious neighbour Château Montrose: although more traditionally restrained in style terms.

Calon-Ségur's heart emblem emanates from the latter half of the 20th century, when the Marquis Nicolas de Ségur, the 'Prince of Vines', who already owned Lafite and Latour, took control and declared: "I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart belongs to Calon."

More recently, Calon-Ségur has been under the iron grip of Madame Capbern-Gasqueton, a great legend of Calon-Segur and Saint-Estèphe, who passed away in 2012. Madame Capbern-Gasqueton was one of Bordeaux’s most well-respected vignerons who, upon the death of her husband in 1985, had been forcibly at the helm. Her unwavering confidence in the terroir of Saint-Estèphe and Calon Segur made the Château one of Bordeaux’s most loved classed growths. You knew where you were with Mdme and you were in a very special place. Her place. The Calon name is wrapped up in a big heart, a heart Madame Capbern-Gasqueton proudly wore on her sleeve.

Her daughter Hèléne and granddaughter Isabelle will continue on to lead Calon-Ségur.

Reviews

"Saturated ruby-red. Pure, highly perfumed aromas of black cherry, currant, plum, minerals, tobacco, leather and fresh herbs. Very ripe, suave and spicy; at once subtle and gripping. Lovely cabernet character dominating today. Very firm, long finish is youthful but not hard-edged. Showing extremely well." Stephen Tanzer

"Surprisingly, this is showing more maturity on the rim than the 1995 Calon-Segur. Contradicting the preconceived style of the vintage, the bouquet has more femininity than the ’95, good lift with freshly rolled tobacco, autumn leaves/November bonfire, a touch of espresso. Moving firmly into secondary aromas with hints of bell pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very harmonious, a slight softness counterbalancing the smoky, graphite-tinged black dusty fruits. Good length, perhaps just lacking a little grip right on the leafy finish. But a very good wine for the vintage – a real foodie wine." eRobertParker.com
