Château Calon Ségur 2016 was purchased in its original wooden case.

Château Calon Ségur's fine red wines are capable of challenging its more illustrious neighbour Château Montrose: although more traditionally restrained in style terms.

Calon Ségur's heart emblem emanates from the latter half of the 20th century, when the Marquis Nicolas de Ségur, the 'Prince of Vines', who already owned Lafite and Latour, took control and declared: "I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart belongs to Calon."

More recently, Calon Ségur had been under the iron grip of Madame Capbern-Gasqueton, a great legend of Calon Ségur and Saint-Estèphe, who passed away in 2012. Today, Château Calon Ségur is owned by the Suravenir company, a subsidiary of the banking group Crédit Mutuel Arkéa headed by Jean-Pierre Denis.

"Deep garnet-purple colored, it is a little closed to begin, slowly revealing warm red and black currants, kirsch and plum preserves with wafts of fragrant earth, violets, chocolate box and wood smoke. Medium to full-bodied, elegantly expressed and finely crafted, it has a wonderfully fine-grained texture and bold freshness supporting the densely packed black fruits, finishing long and mineral-laced." robertparker.com

"This was one of the most impressive wines from the estate when I tasted it from barrel. Now in bottle, it has a gorgeous bouquet of beautifully defined blackberry, bilberry, dark chocolate and graphite aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, perhaps suppler than Cos d'Estournel and more velvety in terms of texture. A dash of cracked black pepper and allspice appears toward the finish, which fans out gloriously. A brilliant wine from Francois Millet and his team." Neal Martin
