Estate Notes

Ausone 2009 comes from a great Bordeaux vintage and was purchased in two original wooden cases.

Château Ausone is the smallest of Bordeaux's 'big eight' (first growths), and its location is as spectacular as its wines; perched on the limestone hillsides that harbour the walled town of Saint-Émilion. Production at Ausone is tiny.

Ausone has been under the inspirational Alain Vauthier since 1995, who has spared no expense in establishing benchmark Saint-Émilion that often ages for 50-100 years. A new cellar (retaining old oak vats) and renovation of the château has breathed new life into Ausone.

Château Ausone is also one of Bordeaux's elite producers – comparable to the Médoc greats of Latour and Mouton Rothschild. Ausone’s wines are unsurprisingly amongst the most sought after in the world.

Reviews

“A masterpiece in the making, proprietor Alain Vauthier’s 2009 Ausone boasts a dense purple color along with notes of powdered chalk, crushed rocks and wild blue, red and black fruits. Extravagantly rich with great minerality, precision and freshness as well as a voluptuous texture (unusual for a baby Ausone), this is an extraordinary wine. Sadly, there are fewer than 1,200 cases ... for the world.” Robert Parker

"Serious medicinal reserve to the aromas of iron, violet and coconutty oak. A real mineral bath on the palate, with outstanding concentration and energy to the flavors of dark berries and flowers. Hiding more than it's showing today and destined for three or four decades of improvement in bottle. The remarkably palate-staining finish features outstanding tannic spine and grip and great lift for such a big wine. A knockout, and likely to be a Bordeaux monument." Stephen Tanzer
