Hungarian Tokaji is one of the world’s greatest sweet wine styles, and we have some wonderfully fine Tokaji from the Royal Tokaji Wine Company (which was co-founded by wine writer Hugh Johnson in 1990), and the historic Disznókő, which was ranked as a Tokaji first growth way back in 1732.

Tokaji is a great match with cheeses and desserts, being careful to match the level of sweetness (Puttonyos) with the sweetness of the pud; ideally the wine should be slightly sweeter. The higher the number of puttonyos, the sweeter the wine (with 6 being the highest and therefore sweetest).

Tokaji is situated in north-eastern Hungary, and is named after the town of Tokaj. The region is relatively small in wine terms, comprising around 5,500 hectares of vineyards, and was declared one of the first wine appellations in the world (back in 1737!).
