Southern Rhône

Discover the southern Rhône’s vineyards are a geographical contrast to the north – comprising wide flat plains spreading from Nîmes in the west to St Tropez in the east. Most of the vineyards in the southern Rhône are designated as Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône-Villages.

The most famous (and leading) appellation is Châteauneuf-du-Pape, named after a papal summer palace that once stood in the town of the same name, and hosting fine producers like Vieux Telegraphe and Château de Beaucastel. The Ventoux meanwhile, is home to the superstar estate, Domaine Fondrèche. Other well-known appellations include Gigondas and Lirac. Southern reds are blends. Grenache is the most important variety and other varieties used include: Carignan, Counoise, Mourvèdre and Syrah. Fine softer, ripe white wines are also made in the Rhône, crafted from Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier.
