Chile was once known as being a good source of easy drinking New World red wine, but over the last few decades producers such as Errazuriz and Viña Von Siebenthal are helping to shift some focus towards the fine wine spectrum, marrying their climate and soils with Carmenère and Cabernet Sauvignon, which grow particularly well in the prestigious Aconcagua Valley.

Chilean wine has a surprisingly long history, dating back to the 16th century when the Spanish brought vines with them as they colonized the country. In the mid-19th century, indigenous French fine wine varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Carmenère were introduced.
