Estate Notes

Case Basse Soldera's Riserva comes around rarely – and only in an exceptional vintages, like 1997. We can’t think of a stronger recommendation for a wine than for Sergio Esposito, one of Italy’s finest consultant winemakers, to say it makes him think of heaven.

Owner Gianfranco Soldera produces a wonderfully pure Brunello style. He has created an oasis of diversity through 7 hectares of woodland and an orchard, sitting beside 12 hectares of vines, whose soil is treated with respect and integrity.

Gianfranco and daughter, Monica, cultivate under entirely organic methods, including the use of wild yeasts. Soldera vinifies the same way he has since his first harvest in 1975: the Brunello ages traditionally in large Slavonian oak for five years, six for Riserva, and then rests an additional six to twelve months in bottle before release.

Reviews

"The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva comes across as a modern-day version of the 1983 and 1990. It offers tons of super-ripe fruit that fill out its structured frame with notable opulence. This is a superb Brunello made in a generous, rewarding style. In 1997 Soldera only made one wine, which was mostly Intistieti fruit with a little Case Basse." Antonio Galloni

"The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Case Basse, which spent over four years in cask, is medium garnet in color but brilliant and vivid in hue. The intense and elegant aromas of wild cherries, red currants, cinnamon, and blood oranges are followed by a palate of superior continuity, energy, and drive. Medium to full-bodied but fine grained and silky, it is focused, long and of superior persistence." eRobertParker.com
