2019 produced wines of sublime fruit expression
Overall, both reds and whites have wonderful fruit expression: rich and rewarding Chardonnay; superbly defined, classic Pinot Noir.
The reds are outstanding and especially for village wines where the sweetness of the fruit is very evident. Tannins are ripe and silky, giving structure and texture. Even the village wines will benefit from a year or two in the cellar and can be enjoyed for another 4–5 years after that. The Premier and Grand Cru wines will need 4–5 years in the cellar to really achieve their full potential – not unusual for great Pinot Noir, but your patience will be rewarded.
The whites are superbly bright and ripe, and perfect for drinking over the next 3–4 years (although it is worth keeping the better Premier and Grand Crus in the cellar for a year or two).
The 2019 Vintage
A dry spring removed the threat of mildew, but late frosts particularly affected the low-lying Côte de Beaune, then followed a week of poor weather in June just as the Chardonnay flowers were about to set. The summer was very warm and dry all the way through to late August and into September. Careful monitoring of ripeness and acidity levels was required to time the harvest perfectly.

Why did we select these wines?
Despite not being able to taste any wines in a professional capacity since this time last year, we are confident in our offer selections. Not just because of the quality of the vintage, which has been widely lauded, but also from tasting an almost unbroken run of 15 vintages. It is no accident that we stuck with some familiar favourites, consistently making quality wines that offer genuine value for money, and estates we have monitored and associated with positive trends in performance.
Remember, many of these wines come from very old, low yielding vines, and often on terrain that demands manual harvesting. Bulk cheap winemaking this is not. These are deeply flavoured, multi-dimensional complex wines borne from the terroir and they deserve a place in your wine collection. The drinking guidelines (for the reds in particular) are only a suggestion at this stage, as some wines will evolve slightly differently to early expectations. Also, since we have not tasted these wines it would seem inappropriate to rate these wines with a score, however the tasting notes (from other reliable sources) do provide a good sense of their respective merits.
