Boekenhoutskloof's 2019 Chocolate Block vintage is a powerful Syrah-based red, with a complex fleshy texture, spicy overtones and deep, concentrated dark berry fruit. Drought conditions resulted in a low yield of healthy grapes, with massive fruit concentration.

The Boekenhoutskloof estate is an iconic South African estate, which has won many awards, including Platters Guide's Winery of the Year and Tim Atkin's Winemaker of the Year. The estate is run by the larger than life character Marc Kent, the technical director and MD, who not only champions his own winery, but has helped put South African wine on the map. Marc is renowned for his groundbreaking approach to winemaking, biodiversity and conservation. However, Marc’s principal commitment is to quality and detail, which really shines through in the sublime 2019 vintage, which really packs a punch.

“…the 2019 Chocolate Block begins with a broad, juicy nose of spiced plum, blackberry compote, fresh cracked black peppercorn, dusty purple flowers and hints of baking spices. Medium to full-bodied, the wine initially expresses fresh, ripe and juicy dark fruit tones with an undercurrent of black and red spice before firm tannins grip the gumline. The wine concludes with a dusty and spicy finish and a lingering tannic edge." robertparker.com

Brooding compote of dark fruits on the nose; perfumed and savoury notes of cured meat, black olives and cigar box. Deep, complex, dark berry fruit fill the fleshy mouth, with ripe, red plums, blueberries, black cherries and tar, plus high notes of violets and spice, all balanced by vibrant acidity. Finishes long with hints of dark chocolate and sweet tobacco lingering.
