Estate Notes

Caecus Verderón Blanco 2016 is a wonderful oak-aged white Rioja from a boutique, organic estate, where quality rather than quantity is the maxim. It is fermented and aged 5 months in barrel resting on the fine lees.

Bodega Pago de Larrea is a perfectly situated 15.5 hectare vineyard planted in 1980 and privately owned by the Larrea family who were co-founders of Viña Salceda. The vines are protected from harsh winds and rain by a limestone ridge to the north, and border the River Ebro to the south, dividing the Rioja Alavesa from the Rioja Alta.

Owner/winemaker Luis Larrea produces beautifully crafted wines with hands-on contact from the growing of the grapes to the bottling. By contrast the great majority of Rioja from the famous traditional bodegas are made in huge quantities with very little terroir identity. This results in Luis’ wines having an individual character and greater dimension than the big names, while maintaining a distinctively Rioja profile and avoiding the over-extracted ‘international’ style of many new-wave Riojas.

The name Caecus given to the wines derives from the Latin for Elciego meaning ‘the blind man’.

Reviews

Fresh white fruit aromas with pear eau de vie, floral and mineral notes, and well-melded creamy vanillin. Elegant and mineral palate with fresh balance on the front, full fat centre, fine mineral depth and development with balanced acidity, and long creamy finish, fresh and lifted.
