Penfolds wine

As one of the UK's leading suppliers of Penfolds wines, we are delighted to announce that we have just taken stock of the much anticipated 2020 Penfolds Collection into our cellars.

Each unique wine in Penfold's stable has the estate's unmistakably brilliant house style, derived from the finest vineyard sites in South Australia, and each provides the ultimate expressions of Australia’s most legendary wines.

The origins of the Penfolds estate are set firmly in the medical sphere, and its reputation built up over the course of the 19th century based on the production of wines which were prescribed to patients by Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold who had settled in South Australia from Brighton in 1844. From the 1940s onwards the focus shifted in favour of producing table wines, and in 1951 the legendary chief winemaker Max Schubert began experimenting with the idea of making a long-lived red wine called Grange.

New vintages now in stock from the Penfolds 2020 Collection include:

Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2018

Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2018 is a prime example of a warm climate Australian shiraz – ripe, robust and generous. This fine red wine is a multi-regional blend, using grapes from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Padthaway. The 2018 vintage was aged for 12 months in seasoned American hogshead barrels, and was purchased in its original cases.

"A strong vintage for warmer-climate shiraz...impressively layered flavors that run the same broad spectrum as seen on the nose and the tannins are so well groomed and run very, very long." James Suckling – 94 points

Bin 128 Shiraz 2018

Penfolds Bin 128 Shiraz 2018 is a lovely deep, soft, complex Shiraz style from fruit grown on the unique terra rossa soils of Coonawarra; a region that exemplifies the elegant and seductive nature of cool-climate Shiraz. It was purchased in its original cases.

Coonawarra has remained the source of Shiraz fruit for the Bin 128 since the inaugural release of the 1962 vintage. In order to further enhance the regional qualities of Bin 128, the wine is matured in a mixture of new and seasoned French oak hogsheads; a method that was refined during the 1980s when the transition was made from American to French oak, suiting this lovely cool-climate style.

"Quite a classic Coonawarra...a very sleek, intense and concentrated core...So complete and effortlessly powerful, in an elegant frame." James Suckling – 94 points

Penfolds RWT (Bin 798) Shiraz 2018

Penfolds RWT Shiraz 2018 is a big, opulent, fleshy Shiraz, with a luxuriously rich texture. 2018 was a great Barossa vintage, and this fine red South Australian wine was purchased in its original case.

First released in 1997, Penfolds' RWT presents an admirable alternative to the multi-regional sourcing and American oak maturation that are hallmarks of Grange, expressing instead, single region Barossa Valley Shiraz matured only in French oak - two major differences from the RWT and the rest of the Penfolds range. Its style contrasts with Grange, which is more muscular and assertive. RWT is made from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and fine texture. The result is a wine that helps to redefine Barossa Shiraz at the highest quality level.

"Always a sexy, voluptuous wine (and admittedly a personal favorite), the 2018 RWT Shiraz ratchets that up to new heights in a great Barossa vintage..." – 98 points

St Henri Shiraz 2017

Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2017 is part of the Penfolds 'Icon and Luxury Range'. It is a traditional fine red wine style first created in the early 1950s, and unlike Penfolds Grange it does not use new oak.

St Henri is characterised by its rich, plush texture when young, gaining soft, earthy, mocha-like characters as it ages, and 2015 was an exceptional year in the quality of the fruit. It hasn't succumbed to fashion since its first release in 1950 and a small proportion of Cabernet provides structure with a feint hint of oak from 50-year-old foudres.

"There’s a lot to love about this wine...A slowly bowed cello rather than a shrill violin. An evocative slow dance to a timeless ballad." Decanter magazine – 96 points

Grange 2016

Penfolds 2016 Grange is a great vintage; big, rich, voluptuous and expressive with wonderful balance.

Penfolds Grange, officially listed as a heritage icon of South Australia, is a fine red wine of extraordinary dimension and power, and Australia's most prestigious red wine. The 2016 Grange includes 3% Cabernet Sauvignon and fruit was sourced principally from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley, with a little from the Magill Estate (in the Adelaide suburbs). It was aged in 100% new American oak for 20 months.

"Impressively concentrated and full-bodied, with an extraordinarily long, velvety finish...decades of cellaring potential if properly stored." – 99 points
