Estate Notes

Auntsfield's South Oaks Sauvignon Blanc 2012 is a limited release, barrel-fermented Sauvignon, which yields from a special small 2-hectare block at the southern elevated corner of the estate, next to some old Oak trees (hence the name).

This unique terroir comprises a unique free draining soil made up of crushed Greywacke rock that has fallen from the steep hill behind, and the fruit is hand-picked into small baskets, whole bunch pressed and fermented in French oak barriques (20% new oak), before being aged aged in French oak barrels for 10 months to add complexity and flavour.

Ben and Luc Cowley are the second generation of this family-owned estate to craft single vineyard wines from Marlborough’s oldest winery that we have been enjoying since 2005. Each wine shows the distinctive characteristics of ripeness, texture and minerality – qualities unique to the ancient Greywacke rock and Loess clay soils of the vineyards.

“The nose is full and broad with rich and deep fruit aromas of savoury green stonefruits along with secondary nuances of green bean in an amalgam of nutty, creamy barrel-fermentation elements. Dry to taste and full-bodied, this has rich, layered and sweet flavours of green stonefruits, green beans, herbs, nuts and creamy oak. The palate has weight and density, and the mouthfeel is robust with grainy textures with underlying acid energy. Some alcoholic power provides drive, and carries the wine to a rich, lush finish with stonefruits, spices and nuts. This is a fulsome, broad and rich oak-influenced Sauvignon Blanc with an array of stonefruit, bean and nutty flavours.” Raymond Chan

Lovely bright straw colour. Ripe tropical nose with herbs, lime high notes and hints of honey and hazlenuts. Lovely, fresh mouthfeel, with a rich, creamy structure derivative of the oak, supported by tropical fruit and minerality to balance. Intense, yet well-balanced, with great length.
