Here’s a classic from the oldest British port house (dating back to 1670). After almost 200 years of family ownership, Andrew Symington of Graham’s fame took control in the early 20th century, and it has remained in the Symington’s portfolio ever since.
Warre’s does not produce such opulent wines as can be found elsewhere in the Symington stable, but they can often have great elegance and perfume. Vintages are drawn from fruit from their prime vineyard site: the Quinta da Cavadinha, located in the Pinhão Valley, and fashioned in Warre’s unmistakable sumptuously rich style, with lovely characteristic underlying minerality. As with other port houses Warre’s maintain a lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia, the buildings housing the largest oak vat used by any house: which holds the equivalent of over 178 000 bottles of port!
