White Burgundy, 2009

2009 was an excellent white Burgundy vintage across all appellations, characterised by lovely rich, round, soft Chardonnays with lovely minerality to balance and relatively low acidity levels, made for drinking relatively young.

2009 produced a glut of healthy, ripe grapes courtesy of a glorious summer from mid-July onwards, which saw constant warm, yet not excessively high, temperatures, while several storms provided sufficient moisture. The harvest took place in early September, earlier than average as growers were worried about losing acidity.

Optimum ripeness meant that sugar tended not to be added to boost alcohol levels. Unlike the more structured, complex 2008 vintage the 2009s are great for drinking near term – seductive, opulent and packed full of early drinking appeal.
