White Burgundy, 2001

2001 was an irregular Burgundy vintage, ranging from average to very good.

The vintage was marred by cold and wet weather, and an August hailstorm affected Meursault, Volnay and Pommard badly. It was a tricky year for many winemakers, but still proved to be a very good vintage for elite growers who put the hard yards in the vineyards and selected rigorously.

For red Burgundy those that did get it right produced a classic vintage redolent of individual terroirs – balanced wines with good, pure fruit concentration, for relatively early drinking. Gevrey-Chambertin was the star appellation for Pinot Noir. Meanwhile the whites range from fragile, average efforts to the best, which show good minerality and crispness. Corton-Charlemagne was the pick.
