Tuscany, 2011

The 2011 Tuscany vintage was dominated by an August heat wave, which caused some vines to shut down, sunburn and dehydration of grapes and ultimately resulted in a very early harvest during which winemakers struggled to retain acidity and freshness, particularly in early ripening varieties like Merlot.

Montepulciano, with its deeper soils, Montalcino with late-ripening Sangiovese and Maremma fared the best.
