Saint-Émilion & Pomerol, 2013

2013 was not a good Bordeaux vintage, marred by uneven ripening, rot and diluted grapes. Producers were forced to pick early, and the best one can say is that the best wines are light, with low alcohol levels for relatively early enjoyment.

Some growers commented that it was the toughest vintage for a generation (in terms of reds), while conversely dry whites and the sweet wines of Sauternes and Barsac flourished. But then Bordeaux will always be judged by its reds.

On the Right Bank the growing season was tarnished by poor flowering and rains, and Merlot suffered from dilution. Careful selection is key.
