Saint-Émilion & Pomerol, 2012

2012 was a tricky year for Bordeaux and Europe’s vineyards in general, with difficult growing conditions (heavy rains and a fiercely hot summer) that some producers got to grips with while others didn’t.

It was therefore a winemaker’s vintage, with guarantees of quality coming from the majority of the grand châteaux who have the financial clout and manpower in the fields to deal with most conditions save perhaps a hurricane, and simply make smaller quantities of great wine in less successful years.

2012 was a Merlot year as the conditions favoured the early ripening variety, or rather favoured the Cabernet-based blends less.
