Saint-Émilion & Pomerol, 1995

1995 was an excellent Bordeaux vintage on both banks of the Gironde, and Saint-Emilion and Pomerol produced some truly great wines in particular. It was also a welcome relief for producers following three difficult vintages.

The wines had good tannin and aged exceptionally well in bottle – with the best Merlots being fat and concentrated, and the Cabernets blessed with plenty of flesh and structure. Consistency was the keyword across all appellations in 1995 (unlike 1996), and a hot, dry summer (avoiding drought due to high ground water levels from previous years) was only upset by some rains in early September, and much of the harvest was picked in perfect conditions.

In terms of pricing, those who bought at original market prices got some real bargains. However, latterly the prices rose considerably.

As for dry whites in the Graves, there were some pretty good wines across the board, but Sauternes was average.

The wines

A plethora of deliciously rich, ripe concentrated wines on the right bank resulted from a wonderfully warm summer. Both Pomerol and Saint-Émilion produced some stunning wines, with Pomerol coming off the best and having another excellent year following its success in 1994.
