Saint-Émilion & Pomerol, 1983

1983 was a good Bordeaux vintage, although inconsistent weather led to irregularity in quality. The left bank outperformed the right bank where excessive humidity and rainfall caused some rot for the more delicate Merlot grape. While the rot was not desirable in Saint-Emilion and Pomerol, Sauternes produced some good wines.

The left bank and Cabernet Sauvignon fared much better, although over-ripening caused problems, especially in the northern Médoc. Margaux was the pick of the left bank appellations.
