Rhône Valley, 2011

2011 was good, but rather odd Rhône vintage for Rhône vignerons.

The Northern and Southern Rhône both saw an unusual inverse weather pattern of heat (in March and September) and cold in July, although the heat returned in August and welcome rains came in early September. A warm subsequent period allowed for harvesting in perfect conditions, but careful picking, of an above average-sized harvest, was required to pick out the ripe grapes from the unripe.

Yields were higher than average and green harvesting was essential, particularly for the region’s top wines. In the south, Grenache fared well and makes up the vast proportion of most blends, which are charming, supple and approachable, early.
