Rhône Valley, 2008

2008 was a difficult Rhône vintage. A late vintage and 25% smaller than average. Those who picked late (for full ripening) fared the best, creating fresh, minerally wines for early drinking.

Flowering was late and poor weather conditions (especially in the southern Rhône) caused uneven ripening, rot, mildew and hail damage.

August was cool and early September wet and disease was rampant. However the sun finally appeared from mid-September going into October, which helped stop the rot and concentrated the berries. There are no standout appellations as all were hit, and success is measured by patience and experience, and those with good drainage also had it easier.

Success was based on patience and experience, rather than individual appellations shining, and those who succeeded picked berries of full maturity, with a good balance between sugars and acidity, softer tannins than the norm, and 'old-fashioned' terroircoming through.
