Rhône Valley, 2001

2001 was an excellent Rhône vintage. A fine summer and a great September concentrated the grapes beautifully. However, this also brought potentially high yields, and so those growers who thinned their crop were most successful.

2001 produced wines of power and structure, yet with a silky texture. The southern Rhône (Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe, Gigondas and Vacqueyras) were outstanding. In the north, it was hats off to Hermitage, Cornas and Côte Rôtie. There were many outstanding wines from the leading labels and smaller, lesser-known estates.
