Rhône Valley, 2000

2000 was an excellent southern Rhône vintage, particularly in the south, following a largely dry, hot growing season, which produced a glut of healthy grapes with high tannin levels.

Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe, the Gigondas, and the Côtes du Rhône Villages were sensational – ripe, concentrated and fleshy with masses of drinking appeal – a wonderful wine drinker’s vintage.

High yields in the north meant that many wines lacked the same concentration and depth as their southern counterparts, although the Côte Rôtie, Hermitage and Cornas still produced some outstanding wines.
