Rhône Valley, 1998

1998 was a great vintage in the southern Rhône and a very good one in the north. A long, dry summer, was followed by sufficient rain in the south to prevent drought and ensure optimum picking conditions.

September rains in the north prevented perfect ripening and the north’s best wines were concentrated and structured, with plenty of tannin to warrant ageing. A vintage for the cellar, particularly Hermitage.

Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe stole the show in the south – a classic benchmark vintage of great richness, weight and depth. Meanwhile, Gigondas and Vacqueyras were also very, very good.
