Rhône Valley, 1997

1997 was a very good year in the northern Rhône and a goodish one in the south. A cool, damp summer meant that those who picked late had riper, more concentrated grapes.

There was a glut of ripe, concentrated wines in the north and the Côte Rôtie and Hermitage were particularly good and made for the long-term.

In the south the best wines were succulent and lush, yet lacking acidity and long-term ageing potential. Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe produced some charming wines.
