Red Burgundy, 1997

1997 was a good to very good white Burgundy vintage and average-good for Pinot Noir.

A potentially great red Burgundy vintage was faltered by excessive heat in September and very few outstanding reds were made. Coulure (where fruit fails to form), was also a problem and reduced potential yields. Though many Pinots lack the structure and concentration for long-term ageing, many more provided pleasurable fruit-driven drinking for early consumption.

It was a particularly good Chardonnay vintage from the Côte d’Or and Mâconnais. The best wines being rich, ripe, fat, with good structure and deliciously concentrated.
