Red Burgundy, 1994

1994 was another average to poor Burgundy vintage – as high expectations following a warm summer were again dashed by heavy rain before the harvest resulting in widespread rot. Many wines were diluted, but those growers who selected rigorously and picked early before the rains in mid-September, produced some good wines.

Chardonnay fared better than Pinot Noir, which tended to be medium-bodied at best and lacking charm and structure. There were some pleasant early drinking whites made, though they lacked acidity.
