Red Burgundy, 1988

1988 was a goodish year for both red and white Burgundy. Following a very fine summer, the harvest took place in perfect conditions. However, yields were a little on the high side, and so many wines lacked the concentration of the very good to great vintages. But those producers who thinned their crops and reduced yields made some fabulous wines in the Nuits, Beaune and outlying districts. The best of the reds were ripe and juicy with velvety tannins, although many had astringent tannin that outlasted the fruit. The finest whites were fresh, with lively acidity, moderate fruit concentration and opulence.
