Piedmont, 1988

1988 was a very good Piedmont vintage for Barbaresco and goodish for Barolo.

Despite a particularly wet and humid spring and early summer, the weather turned mainly hot and dry for July and August, although humidity rose towards the end of each month.

September was dry with cool evenings and conditions were pretty perfect in the early stages of ripening and much of the Nebbiolo crop for Barbaresco was picked in perfect conditions. However, late rains dashed hopes of a great Barolo vintage, which produced a medium sized crop of good wines and those Barolo growers who delayed were more successful, benefitting from a warm, dry spell after the rains.
