Champagne, 2013

2013 was a good, solid Champagne vintage, but was not in the same class as the great 2012 vintage.

The growing season was slow to start, due to a cool, rainy spring, which delayed flowering and left vines susceptible tomillerandage (uneven berry development within bunches) to early summer heavy rains and storms, reducing yields in some areas by as much as 30%. Late flowering ultimately meant one of the later harvest starts for 20 years.

The best wines saw excellent balance between acid, sugar and alcohol levels, and Blanc de Blancs Chardonnay-based Champagnes are the safest bet.
