Champagne, 2008

The 2008 Champagne vintage was a tricky year, but was saved by optimum conditions at harvest, resulting in concentrated wines with nice acidity to balance. As of writing this it is still unclear if 2008 will be declared a vintage Champagne year, but the signs are good.

As with the rest of France a cool, wet spring resulted in erratic flowering and a cool, cloudy main summer couldn't stop some rot and mildew in particular. But a nice warm end of August into September helped ripening and growers picked Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier in optimum conditions.
