Bordeaux Satellites, 2012

2012 was a tricky year for Bordeaux and Europe’s vineyards in general, with difficult growing conditions (heavy rains and a fiercely hot summer) that some producers got to grips with while others didn’t.

It was therefore a winemaker’s vintage, with guarantees of quality coming from the majority of the grand châteaux who have the financial clout and manpower in the fields to deal with most conditions save perhaps a hurricane, and simply make smaller quantities of great wine in less successful years.

2012 was a Merlot year as the conditions favoured the early ripening variety, or rather favoured the Cabernet-based blends less. Therefore those satellite producers that had some money to spend, will have made the best of the vintage.

Reviewer Rating: 93 - Antonio Galloni

"Black cherries, smoke, licorice, tar and dark spices fleshed. Vertical in style and quite structured, the 2012 could use another few years in bottle to fully come together, which will also help the chewy tannins to integrate a bit more fully." Antonio Galloni
