Estate Notes

The Sassicaia 2001 vintage has a super silky and refined texture coating a full-bodied style. An iron fist in a silk glove. A simply stunning Super Tuscan.

Tenuta San Guido was brought under the holdings of Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta in 1940. The Marchese took the pioneering move of introducing non-native varieties into the Sangiovese-dominated vineyards, such as Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc from vine cuttings taken from Bordeaux, and in doing so shaped a whole new generation of wines known as the Super-Tuscans – and thus revolutionising Italy’s image in the wine world.

Sassicaia has become synonymous with a standard of production that is without compromise, respected the world over.

Reviews

"Knockout nose combines raspberry, dark cherry, smoke, coffee, minerals and sexy coconutty oak. Then rich and very complex without any undue weight on the palate, offering deep, concentrated flavors of dark cherry, blackberry, cassis, balsamic herbs and cedar. This still very young wine offers a rare combination of density, intensity of flavor and vinosity, finishing with fine-grained tannins and subtle notes of pepper and herbs. Along with the 2004, this is my choice for the best Sassicaia of the last 20 years, in a classic, ultra-clean and refined style." Stephen Tanzer

"Beautiful aromas of summer fruits and hints of cream. Then turns to dried Provençal herbs, such as rosemary. Well-defined Sass. Full-bodied, with sleek, refined tannins and a silky finish. All in finesse. Classy wine." Wine Spectator
