Poggio Antico has rapidly become a consistently great Brunello producer, which has been rated in the Wine Spectator's 'Top 100 Wines of the Year' five times since 1990. Poggio Antico is situated in Montalcino and dates back to the beginning of the 19th century, but its wine history (and electricity!) begins as recently as the late 1970s. In 1984 Giancarlo and Nuccia from Milan fell in love with the estate and their daughter, Paola, has been in charge since 1987. Antico is one of the highest altitude producers in Brunello where steady breezes sweep away morning and evening fogs and dry the grapes, preventing mold naturally. This highly privileged position and sunny vineyards facing south to southwest guarantee optimum growing conditions, particularly during the crucial maturation period when the grapes gradually reach a perfect balance between sugar and acidity. Reviews.."Pretty aromas of plums, berries and cherries follow through to a full-bodied palate, with a lovely balance of ripe fruit and refined tannins. Long and caressing finish." Wine Spectator "...a pleasant bouquet of balsam wood, loamy soil scents, dried herbs, tobacco, and sweet cherry and fig-like fruit. Medium-bodied, soft." eRobertParker.com "A moderately intense red garnet hue. Some lovely dark fruits on the nose, with an edge of perfume and violets...there's a good quantity of fruit with perfumed notes, and the hint of a developing fatness which should improve the texture." winedoctor.com |
