Château Montrose

Château Montrose is a second growth Saint-Estèphe château, which is enjoying a grand period in its history. Over recent years it has been arguably the most reliable of all Saint-Estèphe Cru Classés, accounting for powerful, muscular, masculine long-lived Bordeaux wines that have proved a match for many Médoc first growths.

Montrose is sited on a gravel knoll less than a mile from the Gironde estuary, its vineyards (comprising one block, surrounding the château) have a south-easterly aspect, running down to the estuary – the proximity to which provides protection against frost. It is one of the Médoc's youngest châteaux, dating back to the late 18th century, and was once part of Calon-Ségur. It is thought by some that its name (mont rose) comes from the pink heather that used to cover the gravel coupe.

Today, Montrose is owned by the Bouygues brothers (Martin and Olivier), proprietors of the Bouygues telecommunication company.
