Château Gruaud Larose

Chateau gruaud larose

Château Gruaud Larose is a second growth Saint-Julien situated on a gravel-rich plateau just west of Château Beychevelle on Bordeaux’s left bank. It is renowned for producing full-bodied, long-lived reds which are tannic when young, yet become wonderfully harmonious with concentrated black fruits and spice with age.

From its foundation by Joseph Stanislas Gruaud in 1725, Gruaud Larose has been split up, divided and passed through too numerous names to mention, and it is not surprising that its consistency has suffered somewhat amongst the Bordeaux elite.

However, this second growth Saint-Julien estate is now managed by the Merlaut family and Jean Merlaut, who heads up the winemaking team, has instituted a more refined, less rustic Saint-Julien style to the wines since the 1990s.
