Estate Notes

Cerbaiona Toscana 1999 was purchased in its original carton.

Cerbaiona's winemaker, Diego Molinari, was an Alitalia pilot for 25 years before retiring in the late 1970s, when he bought this tiny 3 hectares of vines with a massive amount of enthusiasm, yet no practical ability. Diego visited many of Tuscany's top estates, being particularly inspired by the great Biondi-Santi.

Diego transformed the estate's farmhouse and small vineyard using cuttings from Biondi-Santi, and began to make traditional wine for Montalcino. His first vintage, in 1980, comprised just 70 bottles. Grapes are grown according to organic principles and low yields, harvested by hand and pressed in a wooden-sided press in order for the produce to express itself fully.

"The sure bet from Cerbaiona is the 1999 Rosso, a blend of 60% Sangiovese and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. It offers a dense ruby/purple color in addition to sweet, complex aromas of fruitcake, cedar, espresso, black currants, cherries, and leather. Ripe, with superb purity, medium to full body, admirable structure, and unobtrusive but noticeable tannin..." Robert Parker
