Bordeaux 2005 – great values

Filed under: News — admin @ 1:38 pm

bordeaux20052005 was one of the greatest ever Bordeaux vintages.

A perfect growing season provided ideal ripening conditions and grapes with the highest levels of dry extract, concentration and tannin on record. The vintage was characterised by rich wines, with great structure, huge concentration and lively acidity across all appellations.

Pricing for first growth châteaux and other top labels reached new stratospheric levels, yet because it was a great year across the board, there are also many great value Bordeaux to be found from lesser known châteaux in the satellite districts, whose prices are unaffected by the en primeur market.

We have put together an unmissable offer of four of these stunning bargains for you here. These great values are drinking at their peak now, and with savings of up to £30 per case it really would be a shame to miss out on one of the greatest ever Bordeaux vintages.

Château Mourgues du Gres’ Les Galets Rouge – new wine

Chateau Mourgues du Gres' vineyards

Château Mourgues du Gres’ Les Galets Rouge is a superb new addition to our range – a truly great value southern French red from the Rhône.

This deliciously spicy Mediterranean styled red, redolent of the garrigue, is named after Les Grès terroir which is covered by galet roulés – red, purple and sandstone deposits left by a glacial moraine along the Rhône river.

Château Mourgues du Gres is beautifully set amongst garrigue and orchards, and immediately attracted winemaker François Collardin 1990 who formerly worked as an oenologist at Lafite-Rothschild no less. And while François runs the wine side (combining traditional and modern techniques), his wife Anne takes care of the marketing.

Meticulous care and attention is paid to the vines, and the environment is treated with utmost respect, favouring traditional vineyard husbandry. Yields are low and the vines old (averaging 45 years), which ultimately means great fruit concentration and true expression of this wonderful terroir.

Here’s what Robert parker thought of it….“The sexy, super-seductive, Mediterranean-styled 2009 Galets Rouge exhibits a dark ruby/plum color as well as a big, sweet nose of earthy black cherries and black currants intermixed with garrigue, pepper, and spice…

“One of the most impressive estates in the Costières de Nîmes (a treasure-trove of value-priced wines). Mourgues du Grès’ wines are all worth checking out by consumers looking to maximizing their buying power.” eRobertParker.com
